Flour Drum – Newtown

A hidden gem on South King Street Newtown, Flour Drum is all about simplicity, seasonal produce, homely service, and outstanding, wholesome food.

Recently launching their brand new Spring Menu, we had the pleasure of indulging in 3 hours of tasting some of the new additions, and the classic favorites which will remain on the menu for the warmer months.

We started off what could only be described as a feast, with a pancake stack filled with bacon and drenched to the core with maple syrup.

The perfect balance between the sweet maple syrup and savoury bacon kept us coming back for mouthful after mouthful, and the perfect contrast because the bacons slight crisp and the fluffy pancakes made this one of the most moorish and mouthwatering pancake dishes we have enjoyed this year.

Buttermilk Pancake Burger with maple glazed bacon, pineapple jam, red vein sorrel leaves, salted caramel popcorn, house dried pineapple ring, maple syrup and caramelised pear ($19)

Next up was the Chorizo Omelette. If you think those pancakes looked fluffy, my god, this omelette!! Every mouthful was like a cloud of delicious flavours melting in your mouth. A perfectly fluffy texture filled with eggs, chorizo, fetta, roas capsicum and fresh tomatoes…this is the breakfast dreams are made of!

Spanish Chorizo Omelette, herb and garlic confit baked ricotta, fresh chives, roast pepper and tomato relish ($17.50)

We were treated to something extremely special today – a trial of the brand spanking new fresh house made pappardelle with 8 hour slow braised lamb shank ragu, coated in shallot and chilli infused oil. This dish was everything it promised to be and more – the ragu was tender and melted in your mouth and the pasta tasted like it was straight from Nonnas kitchen. Flour Drum prides themselves on a handcrafted approach to cooking with the finest locally sourced ingredients, and this dish is that philosophy on a plate. Some advise from us to you – go and stick your face in this ASAP!!!

Stone ground papperdelle pasta with an 8 hour slow braised lamb shank ragu, shallot and chilli infused olive oil and volcanic black sea salt ($22)

We closed out our delicious experience at Flour Drum with an array of delicious desserts, from fresh dark and white chocolate rocky road, gluten free passionfruit friands and peanut butter caramel slice to an insanely perfect banoffee pie cake. The banoffee pie cake was the highlight of the desserts (marginally…:)) The inside was soft and creamy, while the outside was coated with caramel sauce and topped with delicious dark chocolate and pistachios. Sweet, salty, crunchy and soft – what more could you ask for in a dessert!?

We could not fault Flour Drum if we tried! We can’t wait to pop back and try everything else the menu has to offer 🙂
